As we grow, we are looking for an intern to support our work on a 6-12 month basis.

The Ocean Stars Trust (reg. charity 1110022) is a UK based charity that aims to rebuild shattered lives in Sri Lanka through supporting a range of educational projects in different parts of the country. The projects are focused on working with children who have had difficult backgrounds due to the civil war, the tsunami and flooding.

Since 2005 we have raised over £300,000 through a range of fundraising events and donations. We are now collaborating with different charities and are supporting even more projects on the ground. We have an Ocean Stars team in eastern Sri Lanka who support and manage the field work. Most proposals for future projects come through them.

As we grow, we are looking for an intern to support our work on a 6-12 month basis. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to work in the international development sector as you would have the opportunity of working for a well-connected, growing and grass-roots organisation. It would also be ideal for someone interested in going into teaching as you will gain an understanding into a range of educational projects, and possibly have the opportunity to work directly with our pre-school teachers in Sri Lanka.

The work could include:

  • Sitting with the Ocean Stars Trust trustee board to help support the decisions of the charity (1 meeting every 2 months)
  • Join the fundraising committee to help plan and facilitate events (e.g. Curry evening, London to Brighton bike ride, writing letters to trust funds)
  • Help to manage Ocean Stars on social media (Twitter, Facebook)
  • Support the team in UK and Sri Lanka with administration work related to child sponsorships, ongoing correspondence, and the newsletter

We are, however, fairly flexible on the range of tasks as we would like to support you to learn more about your areas of interest. As we are a small charity, all people who work for us do so voluntarily, including the trustees, so we are unable to offer any payment for the work above. We will cover any work-related expenses occurred and there may be the opportunity to visit our projects in Sri Lanka. We will also be able to support you in future job applications.

We would expect a time commitment of approximately 5 hours a week although this will vary depending on what is going on.

If you think you might be interested in joining the team as our intern, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us on oceanstarstrust@gmail.com.
