No Volunteer Visits in 2020

After 15 years of annual visits, no Volunteers’ Visit in 2020 due to Covid-19

Naomi Booth :: Tuesday 27th October 2020 :: This Story

October is normally a month of joy, happiness, and celebrations amongst our Ocean Stars communities as it is UK volunteer month.

Our preschools receive bags of resources that UK volunteers have taken to Sri Lanka. Each of our 26 preschools is visited and the children enjoy making hats, blowing bubbles, doing craft activities, playing games, dancing, and singing our signature song the Hokey Cokey. All our teachers get together for a training day which is a highlight in their calendar. Calthorpe Park School in Fleet usually takes a group of 21 students and 4 teachers and they visit their link schools. Around 5,000 children and young people and parents are impacted by our annual October visit.

We hope to resume these visits when the global situation improves, and travel restrictions are lifted. Several UK volunteers and students who were due to travel with us in 2020 have had their plans cancelled. Thanks to all the donations we have received through our online fundraising events we were able to provide much-needed resources to all our preschools in October.
